The Best Thing Ever
When you look back over your lifetime, there are no doubt countless good things that have happened, but have you ever asked yourself what is the BEST thing that ever happened to you? From time to time I am moved to write about the lyrics of a love song to make a point about our relationship with Jesus. I am sure that these song writers wrote their lyrics with two lovers in mind; however they are fitting as lyrics between man and God. God is love and the church is the bride of Christ so love songs naturally speak to our relationship with God. Today yet another song spoke to me and prompted me to write about it.
I recently heard an old familiar song on the radio. It was a song from the 60’s. I have sung along with this song many times but it struck me differently this day. Today it grabbed my attention. The song is “You’re The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me” by Gladys Knight. The lyrics speak for themselves. Jesus is clearly the best thing that has happened to all mankind. Imagine yourself singing these words to our Lord.”You’re The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me
“I’ve had my share of life’s ups and downs
But fate’s been kind, the downs have been few
I guess, you could say that I’ve been lucky
Well, I guess you could say that it’s all because of you
If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Ooh, you’ll be there between each line of pain and glory’
Cause you’re the best thing that ever happened to me
Ah, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me
Oh, there have been times when times were hard
But always somehow I made it, I made it through’
Cause for every moment that I’ve spent hurting
There was a moment that I’ve spent, ah, just loving you, yeah
If anyone should ever write my life story
Ah, for whatever, for whatever reason there might be
Oh, you’ll be there between each line of pain and glory’
Cause you’re the best thing that ever happened to me
Oh, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me
I know, you’re the best thing, oh, that ever happened to me

The Bible does not promise us a bed of roses. It does not promise us a life without pain. No, what it does is tell the story of God’s never ending love for His people. He promises that everything works out for all eternity if we remain close to him. Romans 8:28 says: “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” Jesus taught us to love God above all else, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Our joy in this life comes from doing the Father’s will and from the promise of eternal happiness in the life to come.Whether you are currently suffering from grief due to the loss of a loved one or the pain of a difficult medical diagnosis, He is there with you all the way. If it is marital, family or financial strife your struggling with He is there to lean on. Call on him in prayer. Psalm 34:19 gives us this: “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed.”If you are fortunate enough to be going through one of those times in life where everything seems to be going your way, give thanks to God. If you have abundant food, a home to live in and adequate financial resources be sure to give praise to God who is the one from whom all blessing flow. We read this in 1Thess. 5:16-18“Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.”
In the last line of Matthew’s Gospel, verse 28:20 Jesus says this: “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” In good times or in bad He is always here for us. Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to me and if you think about this for just a second I think you would agree that He is best thing that ever happened to you too.Let me make a suggestion. Take the time to write down a list of reasons why Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to you and then read your list each day as part of your morning prayers.Jesus, my Lord you are one with the Father and one with the Holy Spirit and You are everything to me, amen!As always, I love to hear your feedback.
