Have you ever been at a loss for words to describe something? Most of us have. We can see or experience something that is so amazing, so grand, so breath taking, so awe inspiring, so life changing, that mere words cannot capture its essence. Well, I guess as a writer, I am not supposed to be at a loss for words. But today, I am. We just experienced Holy Week and Easter. How can I put the meaning of those events into words?
Good Friday is a strange name for the remembrance of the day Jesus died. Why is it Good? It is good because as Christians we believe that God sent His only begotten Son into our world to atone for our sins. Ephesians 1:7 says it this way, “In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace.” 1 John 2:2 says it this way, “He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world.” Finally, in Galatians 1:3-4 we read, “peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins that he might rescue us from the present evil age in accord with the will of our God and Father.”
It should be obvious that we cannot arrive at the joyous celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday without first passing through His death on Good Friday. It was His death that took away our sins. It was His death that paid the price for our transgressions.
On Easter Sunday we celebrate the day that the Son of God, Jesus Christ, defeated death and opened wide the gates of Heaven for all who believe in Him. With death defeated, Eternal Life became possible for sinners who believe in Jesus Christ. Matthew 28:6 says, “He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said.” Luke 24:34 states, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Mark 16:6 says it this way, “Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here.” And finally, John 20:9 states, “For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.”
So, I ask you, without Christ’s death on the cross would life itself have any meaning or purpose? We would merely live for a short while at which point our bodies would succumb to the corruption of death and return to dirt, and our souls would forever endure the pains of hell.
Through the eyes of faith in Jesus Christ, we know His death granted us forgiveness for our sins, and His resurrection granted us eternal life.
This is the greatest news of all time! My words on this page do an injustice to the reality of what the death and resurrection of Jesus truly means. There can be no greater joy than this. I have nothing to add. Words fail me. So now, allow me to ask you a few questions:
- Is it possible for anyone to truly comprehend the enormity of Christ’s atoning death on the cross?
- Do you personally believe that Jesus died for the forgiveness of your sins?
- Can you see how utterly meaningless life would be without His atoning death?
- Are we humans even capable of comprehending the concept of Eternal life?
- Do you believe that you will be with God forever in Paradise?
- Assuming you believe that Jesus Christ died for the forgiveness of your sins, and assuming you believe He rose from the dead to open the gates of Heaven, do you then agree with me that this is the greatest news ever?
- If it is the greatest news ever, how could we possibly keep it to ourselves? How could we not tell everyone about this most amazing gift? How could we keep from singing?
Heavenly Father, words fail me. Your love for me is beyond my understanding. Thank you for the gift of your Son. Thank you for His death and resurrection. I look forward with anticipation to life with you forever. Amen!
